If I had one word to describe my experience of choosing a toy for my baby, no matter what the baby’s age was, it would be “overwhelming”.
There are too many brands, too many types, too many purposes and every company’s got a logical explanation why their toys are the best, the safest and the most suitable for development of your child. It is good to have choice; but I found that as an inexperienced mum all it caused me was confusion. Many times I was fighting the temptation to just close my eyes, grab whatever I can reach and run away.
The truth is that 80% of the toys out there are junk and only 20% are awesome and your kid is going to love them. And it’s really hard to guess which toy belongs in the lucky 20%.
This is why I am starting this new series “Toys that last”. It will be all about those toys that last longer than a couple of weeks, toys that my kid enjoyed for a long time and toys that won’t be tossed in the hand-me-down pile – I am keeping them for my next (oh my God, I can’t believe I just typed that).
I will be describing the toys for all the ages we have passed, from newborn to almost a 2 year old. The truth is that right now we have a couple of toys for much older kids – but I can tell those are “keepers” and they will sure survive some months until my kid will need something more exciting.
So this was only a taste – the first post is coming out tomorrow. See you there!

2Wow, that’s even longer than we used it! I took the rod out because my son was grabbing and pulling the animals :) But he enjoyed the pushing buttons and playing music.
