Some posts this week that got me thinking in all kinds of directions. SimpleMom asked a question I haven’t considered yet: what should I tell my kid about Santa? How should I introduce him, have Rob dress up like Santa and bring Eric his presents? Should I say that Santa exists but people can’t see him? The basic dilemma here is obviously that it is good for kids to believe in Santa and his presents, it’s exciting and fun, but then when they learn that Santa isn’t real, it’s a disappointment.

When I was a new mom, my first worry was about whether or not the baby is getting enough milk. I was looking for some guidelines and found them. Some came from books, some from lactation consultants, some from other moms - but all of them worked for us and you too may find them useful.

Did you notice how quickly they outgrow practically everything? I had a couple of months when I was shopping for baby clothes every other week - and I hate shopping.
So here is some tips I came up with to reduce the shopping and the hassle to the minimum:

I knew that it’s a great idea to do exercises with my baby. It is pretty obvious that a small baby that can’t move needs someone else to exercise him - but what exactly should I do, for how long, how often etc, I had no idea.
So I started to look for instructions online and found this great program by Carrie Myers-Smith. It’s a complete course on how to exercise your baby and yourself while you’re at it. It starts with easy to follow instructions for a baby massage and continues to the complete baby (and mom!) workout.

It took me 6 months to get back in shape, six long months. During the 8 weeks after having the baby I tried my best to stay away form mirrors. A guy I know told me “Wow, you put a lot of weight on! If I met you on a street I wouldn’t have recognized you”– and I just wanted to disappear. Honestly, I didn’t believe that those 6 kilos of baby fat will ever leave me and buying clothes 2 sizes up was humiliating. I gained 18 kilos during pregnancy and was hoping that most of those belonged to the baby, but if we really think about it - 9 kilos were all the baby supplies, 3 to 4 kilos were Eric’s and all the rest were mine.

Even before my baby was born I decided he will start swimming from 3 month of age. Well, it took a bit more than 3 months because we wanted to do the 4th month immunization first, but eventually we took Eric to the Aquatic centre. At first I was only going to let him swim with the Little swimmers (or Water babies, some course of that sort) but then Rob and I discussed it and decided that we want to let him try once on his own - to see if he even likes the water.

I hate being late. In my old life I used to be rather 15 minutes early than 5 minutes late. That’s the thing that was driving me crazy for the first 5 months of Eric’s life -nothing can be planned any more.
Baby slings are great. I got mine from my brother’s girlfriend, she gave me a baby-sling as a present when Eric was born. At first when I tried to fit him there he resisted and I almost gave up on it, but later I tried another couple of times and he got used to it. Rob skeptically looked at my clumsy attempts to sit the baby comfortably in the sling and told me “Why don’t you go practice on a brick or something”.
Hey, you’re new! I love new people, welcome. You may want to subscribe to Baby-Log via RSS feed or via email. Thanks for visiting!I barely noticed Eric’s first pair of teeth. He wasn’t behaving any differently; the only unusual thing was pink spots on his cheeks. Just before he turned 6 months, one day [...]

Hi, it is me again :)
I feel a bit dissapointed because I cant give my almost-3months-baby boy breast-milk anymore. So I use formula. But maybe the difference between us is my step-mother never complain about this ;)
My baby’s weight is 5,4kg when he was newly 2 months and he is now going to be a 3months on 29th next month.
I usually feed him 120ml every feed but from what I read in the Milk Feeding Suggestion (written in the formula’s can of my baby’s milk) that the dose is become higher according to baby’s age and according to that Suggestion, my baby should be feed 240ml every feed.
So, which is true?

Hi Rissa,
It depends how many times a day you’re feeding. There is a guideline that says for 5kg baby it is 750ml of breast milk/formula a day. If the baby feeds 6 times a day, that would mean 125ml every feed.
But above everything else - just try and let the baby have as much as he wants, and then watch his weight. You do go to a doctor / nurse to check your baby’s development, right? So see that your baby is gaining weight normally and remains in the same percentile and that means you’re feeding him just fine.
Every baby is different, so you need to find what’s right for yours.
