I had no idea that babies can’t fall asleep on their own. It never crossed my mind that a tired baby might need help to relax, close his eyes and nod off.

During the first four weeks since my baby was born I went to see the child health nurse a lot. I wasn’t sure at all that I was doing a good job with Eric and wanted to get him checked as often as possible. She was the first person to open my eyes - “He is so tired!”, she said, “How much does he sleep?”

I had no idea I was supposed to count my baby’s sleeping hours – but then again I had no idea I was supposed to count his dirty diapers to make sure he is hydrated and is getting enough to eat. It was another one of the things where saying “I had no idea” doesn’t really work as an excuse.
