Comments on: When should a baby get his first haircut?

I had this question in my mind as well when my baby boy’s hair grew long… I arrived at a simple answer that I thought was pretty common-sensical. I should cut his hair when his hair gets to messy for my liking or irritates his eyes. The only problem is he really moves too much while his hair is being cut.

Hi Stephanie, if the hair is making him suffer, I say cut it. No baby should be in pain because of hair.

I want to cut my sons hair really badly. He is only 5 months but like his mom, our hair gets nappy very easily. His grandmother tells me not to cut it until his first birthday but i dont know if i can wait that long. when i comb it he is in so much pain… should i cut it now? He is black mixed with white like me

I get tired of conforming, but I try to make things as easy as possible for my children (I want them to be able to “fit in” easily.) So I would give the first haircut as soon as I felt the length of his hair was creating any kind of an issue.

It doesn’t sound right. When my brother and I were little, our mom used to give us haircuts with hair clippers, but no brain damage came out of that - as you can see :)

my daughter has a son that is almost 8 months old and she has cut his hair 3 times. does cutting baby’s hair with hair-clippers give baby brain damage? i need some answers please help where can i go to check my questions out tahnks for advice anyone

Congratulations! That’s a big milestone. My boy is 18 months and I never had the courage to cut his hair - always took him to a barber :)

i cut my sons hair about 2 days ago and he’s 9 months. the hair wasn’t bothering his face or anything but i just believe that little boys should have a clean cut always. it makes them look decent and proper. i gave my boy a bald fade and it looks great!

The only thing I know of that can delay speech (of otherwise normal child) is if the child is bi-lingual, because different words for same objects confuse them and they start talking later. I’ve never heard about early haircuts affecting speech. Sounds crazy to me :)

I just took my 16 mos old for his first big boy haircut, in which he sat and did very well. However I was told by his paternal grandmother that if a child receives his first cut before 2 years of age it’s a possibility that he can have speech delay. I guess it’s a ol’ school sayin. Is this true? This is the first i have ever of this. By the way my child is african american.
