It's definitely a balancing act on both ends of the parenting spectrum. I remember being frustrated with visiting grandparents when my kids were little. Especially if they brought sweets when they knew we didn't allow very many. Long visits are particularly stressful because everyone gets so tired after awhile. That makes it a bit more challenging.

Now, as a grandma myself, I've discovered how difficult it is to have fun with the grandkids while following house rules I may not always know about or remember :) But I know how important it is for me to respect my own kids and those rules as I visit my long distance grandkids and help with my up close and personal grandkids. Sometimes I succeed better than at others :)

It's always worth the extra effort on everyone's sides as we work together to forge relationships that will grow stronger each year. I'm blessed with great relationships with all my kids' grandparents and with all my kids and kids-in-law now and I'm very grateful for that!

We spend the summer time with my parents and they respect my wishes. A lot of it has to do with the fact that I raise my children as they raised me. We all get along and it is a lot of fun.

You're right, kid's well-being comes first, then the rest of the world.

Glad to here that the visit is going well. I too remember the look on my MIL's face the first time DS1 ran up to her yelling GRANDMA!! and gave her a hug.

I deal with people not following my rules the same as them not respecting my son's space, we avoid them. I hate that it's this way but if I don't then I have to argue all the time. Or watch my children like a hawk so that they aren't being given beef stew at 3 months old.
