Wow, that's one timeless post. I love the way Professor Doherty describes what I call traditions - "rituals that have significant meaning behind them". One thing I just want to add - it's OK to have traditions or rituals that are time consuming, after all have you done anything in your life in no time? So when considering a new tradition, time considerations shouldn't be the main factor.

I think you are exactly right. Kids love tradition or rituals and the family unit needs them now more than ever. A while back I posted something out on my blog that was called Putting Family First - How do we Make it a Priority?

In that post I talk about a Professor from the University of Minnesota that had some powerful things to say about that. I hope it is as helpful for you as your post was for me. Great work.

@Katy - Yep, that's a good point. My friends with older kids are telling me that once when they skipped a regular family dinner at their favorite restaurant the kids were shocked. So I guess the lesson here is that traditions are a responsibility, they matter to kids and are not to be taken lightly!

@ Mistress B - the pleasure is all mine, I'm glad I found your blog. Didn't see what it looked like before the makeover, but it sure looks very good now.

Our traditions are things that seem to have evolved without too much conscious thought put into making them.

Like everyone helping with the garden on weekends, or saturday night movie nights.

But yes, very important. I think they add to our children's sense of stability and security.

Thanks for stopping by my blog :)

You are right. My kids love traditions. So much so that even when I think it gets old, they still insist on doing the same ol' thing because "that's what we always do." Kids do like that consistency. It is a great way to pass on family values associated with the traditions.
