I had to laugh - my son is having serious challenges - and he's a late bloomer so to speak, and a Google search on 'poo' issues brought up the photo with this post! LOL!

Our son has been doing the same thing as yours - he has advanced a step further and holds it till night time, and then falls asleep. As soon as he snoozes . . . well, he doesn't wake up for the changing. Next week we may let him fall asleep on the toilet.

I was lucky to find your blog via ICLW :) We're going through the same stage of doing all the work. Can't wait to put Eric in the driver's seat!

Thanks for commenting on my blog!

I second the idea of a silly potty song. My daughter loved it when I sang one. Just be sure to remember what you sang because God help you if you try to substitute another song...or maybe that was just my wacky child. She also would not tell us when she had to go so we were basically potty trained instead of her. We were taking her to the potty once an hour (as was her childcare teacher) for months (!) until we realized that we were doing all the work. So we told her that it was her job to tell us when she had to go potty and it just clicked with her.

So no real advice, just sympathy!

Hi TwinToddlersDad,
thank you for the "no rewards" tip - for some reason I too don't like the idea of offering a treat in potty training :)
You've got a great blog, I am so impressed!
Cheers,
Emma

Hello Emma
I found your blog via ICLW.
You probably get a lot of advice about potty training. For our twins, we really didn't worry too much about "making progress". It sort of happened on its own. One thing that worked for us was the "Once upon a potty" DVD, which my daughter really liked to watch and later imitate with her potty. When they began to show an interest in going to the potty, we clapped and made them feel special, but did not offer a reward.
Good luck and enjoy your Holidays!

Both of my children (girl and boy) took a little while to get the hang of pooping on the potty. I think it's perfectly natural. I waited for a couple months before they were both going poop on the potty every day. What I did in the meantime:

a) Praised them like crazy for all the potty successes.
b) Made up a silly potty song
c) Transfered the poo from the diaper to the potty most of the time. Gross but it worked.

My son has a pooping problem. He's constantly constipated so potty training is really hard for us. But we're working on it and stuffing him full of fiber. :D Hopefully soon, I'll never have to wipe his but ever again!

Poo was the last thing that Bubba finally got a hold on. He was otherwise trained for a year before he would poop on the potty. I don't know what the deal was.

I had a friend with a son who at 5 still refuses to poo on the potty.

I wonder if it's a boy thing.

I always heard that bowel movements are the most difficult. I can understand how he doesnt know when he needs to go. It is very common for adults who are put on catheters to "forget" what it feels like to need to pee. It seems from your reports that he is figuring that one out, but b.m.s are a whole other ball game.
